What it is

Hyrule Diorama presents the world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a miniature, hand-painted relief built from the game's own height data. You can turn the model, visit landmarks, follow the spirit dragons, and change the lighting and weather. It's an unofficial fan project rather than a traditional game.

From the developer

In the developer’s own words, from legendofhyrule.com.

Two weeks ago I posted a Zelda timeline here ahead of the Ocarina of Time remake. Here's what I've been working on: Breath of the Wild's Hyrule as a small 3D diorama you can explore. It has the main landmarks and a few easter eggs. It was the last Zelda game I played, early in the pandemic on a Wii U. It's been a fun little hit of nostalgia revisiting those places. The terrain information comes from data the Zelda modding community which was then smoothed and scaled down. It's Three.js with the lighting and shadows baked when the page loads. I built it with Claude, as I did the timeline. Without it, I'd never have had the time for a project this whimsical, so it wouldn't have seen the light of day. I didn't write any of the code. For me it felt a lot like part of being a tech lead: shaping the ideas and the output.

BeaThe Jam Judge
“For a jam-scale passion project this is a lovely contained idea — a whole Hyrule you can spin and tour — though I wish there were a bit more to do beyond looking.”
IrisThe Pixel Nerd
“The baked lighting and hand-painted relief give it a toy-like warmth, and the day-night shift plus dragon routes make each angle a tiny painting.”
TheoThe Number Cruncher
“There's no real progression or loop here, just a guided tour and some easter eggs, so it's more a nostalgia exhibit than a game you sink hours into.”

How to play

Explore the diorama by rotating and moving around the model in your browser, or let the guided tour take you round the sights. Pick a story location from the list to jump to places like Hyrule Castle, the Great Plateau, or the Divine Beasts, and switch between day, dusk, night, weather, or a Blood Moon.

Tips

  • Start with the guided tour to get oriented and see the main landmarks.
  • Use the story location list to jump directly to Hyrule Castle, the four Divine Beasts, or Kakariko Village.
  • Switch the time of day and weather to change the mood and lighting of the whole scene.
  • Watch for Farosh, Naydra, and Dinraal flying their routes over the map.
  • Hunt for Koroks hidden around the world to make the Great Fairy fountains bloom.
