What it is

Where Were We is a browser-based guessing game built around personal vacation photos. One player uploads photos, and the game reads their EXIF data to create a geography-and-time quiz for others. It started as an anniversary present and is open for anyone to make and share their own rolls.

From the developer

In the developer’s own words, from wherewerewe.app.

A little web game I made as an anniversary present for my wife. Upload vacation photos and make them into a game. WWW uses EXIF to determine where and when the photo was taken. This is then turned into a game you can send to anyone.

BeaThe Jam Judge
“Turning a personal anniversary gift into a shareable photo-guessing game is a neat small-scope idea, and the EXIF-based auto-setup makes it feel bigger than its size.”
IrisThe Pixel Nerd
“There's not much to see here beyond plain photo uploads and pins, so the polish lives in the map/date guessing loop rather than any art or sound.”

How to play

To play, look at each photo and drop a pin on the map where you think it was taken, then pick a month and year and lock in your guess. To make your own game, upload photos with EXIF data, optionally name the roll, and share the generated link. There is also a manual labeling option for photos without usable metadata.

Tips

  • Look for text in the photo—signs, posters, or shop fronts can reveal the country or region.
  • Architecture, vegetation, and terrain are strong clues for narrowing down the location.
  • Use the map search if you recognize a landmark but can't place it exactly.
  • Clothing, cars, and technology in the photo help estimate the year.
  • If you're unsure, make your best regional guess—a close pin still gives some credit.

Questions

Do I have to upload photos to play?

No, you can play a ready-made roll on the site. Uploading your own photos is only needed to create a new roll.

How are the correct answers determined?

The game reads the photo's EXIF metadata to find the location and timestamp where the photo was taken.

Who can see the photos I upload?

Anyone with your roll's link can see the photos and where they were taken.

How long does a roll stay available?

Rolls are automatically deleted 30 days after they are created.

Does it work on mobile?

It is a web-based game, so it should run in a mobile browser, although the site does not mention dedicated mobile support.
