What it is

Muertitos is a matching puzzle game with a Día de Muertos theme. You push pieces into a 4x4 grid to match identical calaveritas, and new piece types unlock as you play. Originally released on mobile in 2014, this HTML5 version has been polished for browser play.

From the developer

In the developer’s own words, from fayer.itch.io.

Muertitos is a matching puzzle game that adds thinking ahead and planning to the genre, it was designed in a way that seems easy at the beginning but gets harder every move you make. The game was born out of our love for the 'Día de Muertos' (Day of the Dead). We included some aspects of our culture in the art of the game, most of the time you play with pieces that look like Mexican 'calaveritas', which are intricate and colorful.

The game is played in a 4x4 grid where you must push in pieces in order to match them with those that are like them. You start with 4 different 'calaveritas' and you unlock more as you play.

This game was originally released in 2014 for mobile platforms, but it was taken down from them several years ago, I took some time to polish it enough for it to work .

Editor takes

BeaThe Jam Judge
“A tight, self-contained puzzle that stretches a single clever push-matching mechanic across escalating difficulty, and the Day of the Dead art does double duty as both theme and visual hook—exactly the kind of focused scope that makes a small project feel complete.”
NicoThe Commuter
“Perfect for a quick break since each 4x4 board reads instantly and the browser port keeps the original mobile-friendly flow, though I wish there was a save system so I could come back to a long session without restarting.”

How to play

Push pieces into the 4x4 grid so matching calaveritas line up together. Think ahead before each move, because every placement affects the board and future matches. The game starts easy but becomes more demanding as more piece types appear.

Tips

  • Look at the whole grid before pushing a piece, not just the piece you are placing.
  • Try to keep open space around pieces that may need to match soon.
  • Consider how a move shifts other pieces, not only whether it creates one match.
  • As new calaveritas unlock, watch for pairings you haven't seen before.
  • If the board starts feeling crowded, prioritize moves that clear space.
