What it is

Smokin' Colts is a first-person western shooter for AGA Amiga computers. Set in the fully 3D town of Dusty Creek, it mixes gunfights, duels, exploration, and story quests. The game runs on a custom sector/portal engine in fixed point on a 68030 without an FPU.

From the developer

In the developer’s own words, from fliegeralarm-games.itch.io.

**Smokin' Colts** - a first-person western shooter for the Amiga 1200/4000

(AGA, 68030).

You ride into Dusty Creek with the sun at your back and a Colt on your hip. The town is scared stiff: Bart Hollis and his gang come and go as they please, the sheriff can't stop them alone, and the bank's safe is next on their list.

Walk the main street, talk to the townsfolk, order a whiskey at the saloon - and get ready, because ordering that drink is what brings the Hollis gang riding in.

Smokin' Colts is a fully 3D western town on a classic Amiga: a sector/portal engine with sloped floors, two-storey buildings you can walk into, swinging saloon doors, lamp-lit interiors and a 360° sky - all in fixed point on a 68030 without an FPU.

- **A living western town** - saloon with piano player and dancer, a two-storey hotel, bank, sheriff's office and jail, general store, barber, doctor, undertaker and livery stable. Every building can be entered.

- **Two chapters, one story** - Dusty Creek and the Hollis gang, then the mystery of Silver Springs. Choose between the army captain and the Apache scout, and live with what follows.

- **Many places** - the train, Dusty Creek, the Hale farm with Jack's hidden cellar, Boone's homestead, Boot Hill, the Hollis Canyon, Silver Springs, a paddle steamer, a silver mine with a mine-cart ride, an outlaw hideout and an Apache camp.

- **Gunfights with cover** - enemies duck, peek, flank and throw dynamite. Shoot the gun out of a hand, club them, or let them surrender and walk them to the sheriff.

- **Five weapons** - Colt, coach gun, Winchester, Sharps with scope, and a lasso. Fan the hammer, slow down time.

- **Duels at high noon** - wait for the bell. Draw too early and you go to jail.

- **Law or outlaw** - shoot the wrong man and the sheriff calls you out. Bounty hunters, a county posse, a bank job and your own wanted poster follow.

- **A living frontier** - day and night, thunderstorms, sandstorms, floods, a stagecoach and a train that come and go, townsfolk at work who react to every shot.

- **Poker, fistfights, arm wrestling, a shooting gallery** - and errands for the folks in town.

- **Quest journal, maps, two newspapers, save games** - automatic saves after every fight.

- **Five languages** - English, German, French, Spanish, Italian.

- **Stereo sound** - hear where the shots come from. Music streams from disk.

- **Three screen sizes** and four detail levels, including an automatic one.

- **Three screen sizes** - 256×160, 320×200 or full 320×256, plus a low-detail mode for more speed.

This is a **demo**: the whole town of Dusty Creek with its story, side quests, duels, card games and bounties. The road north to Hollis Canyon, the old mine and Jack Hollis are still to come.

The game runs on real hardware, but it is still in development. If something looks wrong, please leave a comment - it helps a lot.

This is the **full game** , version 1.01: both chapters from the train ride to the last duel in Silver Springs, with its epilogue and ending. Everything that was in the demo is still here - and a lot more.

- Amiga 1200 or 4000 with **AGA**

- **68030 at 33 MHz** or faster (no FPU needed)

- **2 MB Chip RAM + 4 MB Fast RAM**

- Hard drive or CF card (music and pictures are read from disk; floppy is not supported)

- Optional: CD32 pad or joystick in port 2, mouse in port 1

A WHDLoad slave is included but untested so far; with WHDLoad the game needs about 8 MB of Fast RAM. With 4 MB, start the game directly from Workbench.

Editor takes

KaiThe Speedrunner
“Ducking, peeking, dynamite and four detail levels suggest the action can stay tight, but on a stock 68030 I'm worried the framerate will make quick draws feel mushy.”
RookThe Run Addict
“Law or outlaw, two chapters and a wanted poster promise real replay value — but this is just the Dusty Creek demo, so I can't yet say how different runs actually feel.”
WrenThe Story Reader
“A dusty town with barkeeps, newspapers and a moral fork between army captain and Apache scout — that's the kind of atmospheric western that makes me want to ride in slowly.”
IrisThe Pixel Nerd
“A fully 3D AGA town with lamp-lit interiors, sloped floors and stereo gunfire is a technical love letter; I just wish the limited palette didn't flatten those sunsets.”

How to play

You move through the town, enter buildings, and talk to residents to pick up errands and story leads. Ordering a whiskey at the saloon triggers the arrival of the Hollis gang, leading to gunfights in which you can use cover, disarm enemies, or let them surrender. In duels you must wait for the bell and draw at the right moment.

Tips

  • Use cover during gunfights, since enemies duck, peek, flank, and throw dynamite.
  • Try to shoot weapons out of enemies' hands rather than killing them to avoid trouble with the law.
  • In duels, wait for the bell; drawing too early sends you to jail.
  • Talk to townsfolk and take on errands to unlock more of Dusty Creek's story and side content.
  • Choose your shots carefully: shooting the wrong person makes the sheriff call you out.
