What it is
Coup of Appliance is a short JRPG-style game made for Ludum Dare 60, where your old household appliances suddenly rise up and invade your home. It's a story-driven survival experience without leveling or skill trees, focusing on exploration and battles.

Hi! I made this game for Ludum Dare 60! ( link to LD60 game page )
This is my take on the theme “old tech”
Once you have enough old tech in your home, it's only a matter of time before they decide to break in one day together. So imagine what would happen if they all decided to break in on the same day. How would you react to it? Isn't it a coup against your sanity?

The game describes such an event in a light JRPG style, since I recently played a lot of them and wanted to do something cool. The game doesn't contain any level system or skill tree, it just gives you what you need to endure such an event and not be overwhelmed by the game design.
How to play?
Use WASD/ARROWS to move between rooms. During battle, use WASD/ARROWS or the MOUSE to navigate. I recommend searching stashes of items during exploration. It may help you with the final boss. *If you get bored, try cheat with F1.*

How the game was created in 48h If you managed to finish the game and wonder how it was made, this section is for you. This is a compo entry with a rule that requires you to make a game in 48 hours. So, did I make the whole game in 48 hours? Yes, all the content, like the idea, art, story, and music, was made during the jam. In the last few hours, I was running around the kitchen and recording SFX for the game on my iphone. But many parts of the code were reused from my older games, like the dialogue system, which has moved from one game to another for three years, as well as the overall progression system, most of the effects, and the shaders. I do think I have to clarify this, since the more projects I make, the easier it is for me to make a bigger game.
Basically, the first thing I do is make things that I'm not sure about, and while drawing, I leave myself notes about everything. Once the content art is done and I start writing code, I don't actually think at all, I just do what I need to do. Once I combine everything and polish it, I send the game to my friends for playtesting, and I make music and SFX. But this way of making things limits how many *new* ideas you can have. And since I haven't won any jams yet, I wouldn't recommend this way for winning jams
Editor takes
“The chunky pixel art nails that retro appliance menace, and the iPhone-recorded kitchen SFX give it a charmingly tactile crunch.”
“A light JRPG about household appliances revolting is a wonderfully absurd premise, and the low-stakes tone keeps the coup charming instead of grim.”
“With no skill tree and a single linear campaign, this is a one-and-done coup rather than a game you'll rerun for different builds.”
“Movement is tight and battles let you use keyboard or mouse, though the final boss just expects you to have searched stashes — no real curve, just prep.”
How to play
Move between rooms with WASD or the arrow keys. During battles, navigate with the same keys or the mouse. Search stashes of items while exploring, as they can help you with the final boss.
Tips
- Search stashes of items thoroughly; they may be essential for the final boss.
- Explore every room before moving on so you don't miss useful supplies.
- If you're stuck or just want to see the story, press F1 to cheat.
- In battle, try both keyboard and mouse controls to find which works best for you.
- Pay attention to the story and dialogue; it's a narrative-focused JRPG.
